Samarium is a chemical element with the symbol Sm and atomic number 62. Samarium has a silvery white luster. In air, it slowly oxidizes at room temperature and spontaneously ignites at 150°C. The major commercial application of samarium is in samarium–cobalt magnets, which have pone of the highest resistances to demagnetization known. Samarium-149 has high cross-section for neutron capture (41,000 barns) and is therefore used in the control rods of nuclear reactors. Other applications of samarium include catalysis of chemical reactions, radioactive dating and X-ray lasers.
