Panaxadiol: A Hydrolysate of Ginsenosides with a Wide Range of Pharmacological Effects
Ginsenosides can be isolated from from various plants, including Panax ginseng. However, the low membrane permeability and the gastrointestinal tract influence seriously limit the absorption and bioavailability of ginsenosides. Panaxadiol (another name: 20(R)-panaxadiol), a hydrolysate of ginsenosides, is expected to show improved bioavailability and diverse pharmacological activities. In fact, it has been reported that panaxadiol exerts a wide range of pharmacological effects including anticancer activity. Moreover, relative stable skeletons and active hydroxyl group at C-3 position and other reactive sites are suitable for structural modification to improve biological activities.
