To a stirred solution of 4,4'-oxybis(methylbenzene) (28) (5.0 g, 25.2 mmol, 1 eq.) and NBS (8.98 g, 50.4 mmol, 2 eq.) in carbon tetrachloride (125 mL) under nitrogen was added a catalytic amount of AIBN. The reaction mixture was heated to 80-90 C (reflux) and stirred for 6.5 h. The solution was then cooled and the succinimide was removed on a sintered glass filter funnel. The solvent was removed in vacuo to yield the desired product 29 as beige crystals (8.3 g, 93%). A portion (1.82 g) was purified by flash chromatography (10:1 hexane:EtOAc) to yield 29 as white crystals: mp 85-86 C (lit.29 mp 93-95 C). 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 7.38 (d, 4H), 6.98 (d, 4H), 4.52 (s, 4H). |

The resulting mixture was irradiated by a visible light lamp (with a wavelength of about 400 nm) for 12 hours to form a crude product (in an organic layer). 4,4'-oxybis((bromomethyl)benzene) was obtained with a yield of 650% after removing the solvent from the crude product by evaporation. |
