REVIEW 5-Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is used as a photosensitizer for photodynamic detection and therapy for actinic keratosis. It is biosynthesized from succinyl-CoA and glycine and is the first compound in the porphyrin synthesis pathway. It elicits synthesis and accumulation of fluorescent porphyrins in epithelia and neoplastic tissues.
