Hydrophobic hypericin is a red pigment naturally present in Hypericum perforatum, and its fluorescence can be measured at 600 nm. It is located in the inner membrane of the cell, including the nuclear envelope, mitochondrial membrane, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes and endoplasmic reticulum.
Hypericin from Hypericum perforatum has been used in:
A large amount of dilution test in broth and antibacterial test against bacterial strains
As a medium supplement for radiolocalization studies of human malignant melanoma cells
As a ligand for the progesterone X receptor (PXR) and as a nonfat medium supplement for primary human hepatocyte cultures
Biochemical/physiological effects
Hypericin is a potent inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC), telomerase, cytochrome P450 and reverse transcriptase. It has photosensitive function in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photodynamic diagnosis of tumor cells (PDD).
Anthraquinone derivatives in St. John's wort are effective against Gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
