Introduction to Desmopressin

Definition: Desmopressin is a synthetic analogue of the natural hormone vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone, ADH). It is used to regulate the body's balance of water by reducing urine production.

Function: Desmopressin functions as an antidiuretic agent, promoting water reabsorption in the kidneys, which helps reduce excessive urination. It also has hemostatic properties, aiding in blood clotting by increasing the release of von Willebrand factor and factor VIII.

Applications:

1. Medical: Used in the treatment of conditions such as diabetes insipidus, bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis), and hemophilia A or von Willebrand disease to control bleeding.
