Overview: 

Polyacrylic acid, referred to as PAA, alias 2-acrylic homopolymer, acrylic resin coating, acrylic resin, acrylic monomer polymer, acrylic modified resin, acrylic resin emulsion, is a water-soluble acrylic polymer, but also soluble in some polar solvents, such as methanol, di alkyl and ethylene glycol. The ionization constant is 4.75. Because the molecule contains a large number of carboxyl groups, it can react with bases, alcohols, amines, and can also be dehydrated, degraded and complexed. It can be used as thickener, dispersant, flocculant, adhesive and film forming agent, etc., widely used in coating, plastic, paper, textile, rubber, food, medicine, cosmetics and water treatment industries.

Physical and chemical properties: 

low molecular weight polyacrylic acid is colorless transparent solid. Its 20% to 30% aqueous solution is light yellow or colorless viscous liquid. Molecular weight is 500 ~ 5000, pH value is 2 ~ 4. Its dissociation constant is approximately 5×10-5, which is similar to the dissociation constant of acetic acid (1.8×10-5), and is much larger than the first dissociation constant of carbonic acid. Therefore, polyacrylic acid is a weak acid stronger than carbonic acid. It is generally stable for strong acids, strong alkalis and oxidants, but under high temperature or long-term light, the low molecular weight polyacrylic acid will still be repolymerized, so that its molecular weight continues to increase, the viscosity will also increase, and finally become a jelly state of solid precipitation from the aqueous solution. It is a chelating agent and lattice distortion agent, and can form stable complexes with metal ions such as calcium and magnesium in water. It also has good dispersion performance, which can disperse amorphous particles such as crystalline compounds, soil, dust, corrosive substances and biological debris in water.

Application 

1. Used as scale inhibition and dispersant in industrial water treatment. Good compatibility. Can also be used for pre-drinking water treatment. It is used to separate red mud in the preparation of alumina. In the chlor-alkali factory used for refining salt water is mostly used in the manufacture of cosmetics, as an ointment can promote the absorption of yellow mold, but also can be used for drug control release. Used to prepare finishing agents for leather and certain high-end goods, Acrylic resin paints are used to fix chrome salt, aid tanning, reduce chromium pollution, etc. 

 2. It can be used as an excellent suspension agent, emulsifier, transparent substrate of advanced cosmetics and pharmaceutical excipients, and it is also the most effective water-soluble thickener. It is also used for toothpaste, as a thickener and binder, and can be used with other polymers.

3. It is a commonly used dispersant, which can disperse the microcrystals or sediment of salt such as calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate in water without settling, so as to achieve the purpose of scale inhibition. In addition to being used in circulating cooling water system as scale inhibitor and dispersant, it is also widely used in papermaking, textile, printing and dyeing, ceramics, coatings and other industries.
