Production method

9.3g (50mmol) benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and 3.8g(25mmol) sodium subsulcate were dissolved in a mixture of 80ml water and 50ml dichloromethane. Under the ice bath cooling and stirring, 30.2g(175mmol) of 47% hydrobromic acid was slowly added for about 15min. The organic layer is separated, and the water layer is extracted with methylene chloride. Organic layer was combined and dried with anhydrous MgSO4. The residual was recrystallized with dichloromethane ethyl ether (5:1, V/V) to obtain 16.6g of orange-red crystal with 85% yield.

Use

The brominating agent of aromatic ring can react with phenol and its aromatic ethers, aromatic amines and aromatic amides, aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic heterocyclic compounds to selectively prepare the corresponding single, double and tribromide products. It can also be used for the addition of olefins, oxidation reactions of alcohols, phenols, ethers and other bromination reactions.
