N-Phenylglycine is a derivative of Glycine. N-Phenylglycine is also sometimes coupled with Glycidyl methacrylate to create a surface active comonomer that promotes adhesive bonding of materials to hard tooth tissues.

Production method

40% formaldehyde solution, sodium cyanide solution and aniline were mixed, then ethanol was added to make a uniformsolution. The solution is heated to produce a violent reaction accompanied by ammonia gas. When the reaction solution nolonger produces ammonia gas, the ethanol is removed by distillation and precipitated with acid. Filtered and recrystallizedwith dilute ethanol, pure N-aniline acetic acid was obtained.

Use

It is used for colorimetric determination of copper, intermediate for making indigo, and also for biochemical research.
