4.3. The procedure of two-step route. Step 1

General procedure: A mixture of aryl alcohol (3.0mmol), nitrobenzene (1.0mmol), RuCl₃·3H₂O (3.0mol%) and K₂CO₃ (1.0mmol) was stirred at 130°C for 24h in a sealed tube under a nitrogen atmosphere. After cooling to room temperature, water (10mL) was added and the aqueous solution was extracted with dichloromethane (3×10mL). The combined extracts were dried with anhydrous Na₂SO₄, the solvent was removed and the crude product was purified by a short flash chromatography column.
